“Sometimes, history reveals itself twice, once in stone and once in reflection.”
At the Vijaya Vittala Temple, I noticed the horsemen carved along the foundation and a small puddle of water nearby. Instead of treating the puddle as something to avoid, I used it to bring the sculpture into reflection. The idea was simple, to let the carved horsemen and their mirrored forms share the same frame, almost as if the past was repeating itself below the stone.
The warm light helped bring out the texture of the carving, while the reflection added another layer to an otherwise familiar architectural detail. I just moved around until the horsemen and their reflected forms aligned the way I wanted. Sometimes at Hampi, the photograph appears only when you stop looking at the monument as a whole and start noticing the small relationships around it.
