YPS Bengaluru
Youth Photographic Society is one of India’s most active photography clubs, rooted in Bengaluru since 1971. CPA recommends YPS to photographers who want serious learning, salons, workshops, exhibitions, peer community, and a deeper connection to the craft.
From A Young Hobby Group To A National Institution
YPS began when photography was still an emerging art form in southern India. With encouragement from the Department of Youth Services in the then Government of Mysore, a group of young photography enthusiasts created a club that gave Bengaluru a serious space for learning and practicing photography.
The society was registered in 1972 and grew under the guidance of senior photo-artists, mentors, and administrators who helped shape its standards. Over time, YPS became known not only for member activity, but also for the quality of its exhibitions, salons, and contribution to Indian photography.
Salons, Conventions, And Open Judging
YPS has hosted major photographic events, including Federation of Indian Photography conventions and FIAP Nature Biennials. Its 2024 FIP Convention in Mysuru brought together a large community of delegates and participants.
The society is especially respected for its salon culture. With 44 national salons and 17 international salons, YPS has built a strong reputation for professional organization, transparent judging, carefully presented exhibitions, and learning value for participants. YPS was also early in holding virtual exhibitions during the pandemic.
Learning Through Programs, Exhibitions, And Dṛṣṭi
YPS runs programs, workshops, presentations, member meets, and webinars across photographic subjects. Exhibitions such as Frames, Best of the Best, and FotoFantasy have brought photographs into public view and encouraged interaction between photographers and visitors.
The YPS journal Dṛṣṭi has become a respected publication, combining writing and strong photographic work. Its recognition in Photographic Society of America inter-club newsletter contests shows how seriously YPS treats both images and photographic communication.
Junior Associates
YPS offers a Junior Associate facility for young photographers between 12 and 18 years of age without an annual fee. Applicants can apply online with a photograph and government-issued age proof, and the associateship is confirmed after age verification.
Junior Associateship is valid for one year from acceptance and must be renewed annually. Junior Associates do not have voting powers, cannot attend the AGM, cannot contest elections, cannot serve on the Executive Committee, and are not eligible to become Life Members while in this category.
